Cutting carbon emissions for construction giant

Demonstrating low-carbon concrete alternatives.

The University of Sheffield AMRC worked with the University of Cambridge to help construction giant Laing O’Rourke cut its carbon emissions from concrete by 28% – a 14.4m kgCO2e saving, the same as planting 120,000 trees.

The long-term research programme, co-funded by Laing O’Rourke and Innovate UK, proved that a low-carbon concrete alternative can be used in place of traditional concrete.

The AMRC developed a simulation of the Laing O’Rourke Centre for Excellence for Modern Construction facility, in Nottinghamshire, to understand its process flows and investigate potential changes without affecting real-life production lines.

Rossella Nicolin Head of Sustainability for Europe at Laing O’Rourke, said:

Very soon all our new projects will only use low-carbon concrete. I want to thank the team whose hard work has made it possible.
