For the first time, a report brings together the varied insights from published data, combined with market analysis, direct input from leaders and key stakeholders across the hydrogen landscape to create a consensus view in one report.
The Hydrogen Innovation Initiative (HII) has launched the UK Hydrogen Innovation Opportunity, building a common understanding of the opportunity that the emergent global hydrogen economy presents the UK.
The report and its supporting publications brings together insights from sources across the hydrogen landscape for the first time. It states that by 2050 the global hydrogen economy could be worth up to $8 trillion and that the global hydrogen technology market has the potential to reach $1 trillion.
For the first time, it brings together the varied insights from published data, combined with market analysis, direct input from leaders and key stakeholders across the hydrogen landscape to create a consensus view in one report.
HII is a group of organisations bringing together industry, government, and academia to create an investible, globally competitive hydrogen technology and services sector, here in the UK.
The UK Hydrogen Innovation Opportunity sets out four strategic focus areas: production of hydrogen and conversion into carriers; propulsion systems for transport; industrial hydrogen for feedstock, heat and power; and end-to-end hydrogen storage.
The report was launched at an event in London in April 2024, with keynote speeches from Rt. Hon. Chris Skidmore and Katherine Bennett CBE, CEO of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult.
Katherine Bennett said:
As the most abundant element in the universe, we cannot ignore its potential as a zero-emission energy source. For the UK’s engineering and manufacturing sectors, hydrogen is a natural pivot. We have the skills in our transport and petrochemical manufacturing sectors to move rapidly to build capability in hydrogen and hydrogen technologies.
In July, the Hydrogen Innovation Initiative, Innovate UK and the EPSRC Hydrogen Hubs, UK-HyRES and HI-ACT will host the UK Hydrogen Innovation Showcase. The event will highlight the innovative projects taking place across the UK hydrogen supply chain, featuring key players in the hydrogen landscape.
