Pioneering digital technologies with an immersive workbench

The 45 hours of skilled labour gained each week is the equivalent of one full-time role.

NCC helped aerospace manufacturer Leonardo by applying cutting-edge digital technologies to the development of an immersive workbench, a digital system that projects step-by-step instructions, tracks motion and provides real-time quality checks.

Producing aerospace rotor blades requires precision, consistency and experienced operators. The new workbench helps new operators train faster and experienced staff work more consistently, reducing variation and improving build quality.

The system integrates overhead projectors with a motion capture system that continuously monitors tool positioning. A Leap Motion controller enables hands-free operation, while a set of digital cameras document each process step to create a comprehensive digital passport.

The technology is set to reshape composites manufacturing by addressing long-standing quality-control challenges, opening up new possibilities for future developments and helping to bridge the skills gap between seasoned and new operators.

Usman Sikander, Technology & Innovation UK, Leonardo, said:

Collaborating with NCC has assisted Leonardo in developing new technologies to improve efficiency and solve complex problems through innovation. We continue to explore the possibilities of revolutionary digital technologies with NCC, advancing our next-generation manufacturing to enable greater transparency, sustainability and ultimately a more secure future.
