Metrology (the science of measurement) provides critical quality assurance for manufacturing processes.

The HVM Catapult  metrology forum has developed a core set of technologies and capabilities to advance metrology capability for high value manufacturing. The forum supports all HVM Catapult centres to improve their own metrology capabilities, and promote our R&D capabilities and the services we can provide to industry. Activity encompasses a variety of technologies including: Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) – capable of measuring small components through to full cars, with contact and non-contact probes, and in some cases, down to sub-micron accuracies; Large Volume Metrology – large CMMs, laser tracking systems, indoor GPS; Portable measurement systems – manual measurement arms with touch probe and laser scanner sensors, structured light systems; and X-ray, CT and electron microscopy – destructive/non-destructive inspection, and dimensional metrology of complex and internal structures.
