Formulations refer to the putting together of components in appropriate relationships or structures, according to a formula. Formulations are commercially produced for drugs, coatings, dyes, alloys, cleaning agents, foods, lubricants, fuels, and many others.

Formulation underpins many chemistry enabled markets ranging from retail and consumer goods to personal care products and the automotive, aerospace and energy sectors. The combined global market for formulated products is estimated at $1000 bn per annum and growing. Complex formulated products such as detergents, cosmetics, paints, adhesives, and lubricants are ubiquitous in everyday life. The design and manufacture of formulated products is a highly significant value-adding step, with a value multiplier ranging from around 3 – 100.  CPI is the lead centre with in the HVM Catapult for formulation. The centre provides expertise to support and develop innovations in formulation with a skilled team of scientists and sector specialists able to help partner companies of all sizes to develop and improve their formulation performance and product portfolio. The centre can explore alternatives to traditional processing techniques to deliver precisely controlled, resource-efficient manufacturing processes. CPI combines unique open access facilities with practical experience to enable companies to develop and optimise their products.
