Electronics

Electronics deals with electrical circuits that involve active electrical components such as vacuum tubes, transistors, diodes and integrated circuits, and associated passive electrical components and interconnection technologies.

The UK is still the fifth largest manufacturer of electronic products in the world and produces low volume, high reliability and high cost products for applications such as aerospace and military. A significant part of UK electronics manufacture is of high value products made in low volumes, which are highly complex and are mission or safety critical so must be highly reliable, for example jet engine electronic controllers (EECs). The demands of this type of production are for fast setup times with very complex builds and minimal tuning of parameters or rework from job 1. The electronics manufacturing theme at the MTC possesses a full, conveyorised surface mount line, together with conventional assembly and process characterisation equipment. This is a unique facility in that it is a production capable not dedicated to production. Having the complete line allows identification of process coupling, so that new machines and concepts can be debugged “offline” (i.e. without loss of production time), characterised and then inserted into member’s shop floors with minimum downtime and risk.
