International building consultancy joins the MTC

Award-winning international technology-led design and operations consultancy Bryden Wood has become the latest company to join the innovative Manufacturing Technology Centre

Award-winning international technology-led design and operations consultancy Bryden Wood has become the latest company to join the innovative Manufacturing Technology Centre. The two organisations will work together to bring innovation and technological advances to the construction and infrastructure sectors.

Bryden Wood, leaders in offsite and manufacturing-led construction and pioneers of using big data to redefine building design, already has a close relationship with the MTC through several Innovate UK-funded projects. These bring the latest advanced manufacturing processes and technology to the UK construction industry.

Now Bryden Wood and the MTC have cemented their relationship with formal membership, and will continue to strengthen the links between manufacturing and construction, exploring ways to close the gap between construction and manufacturing to create a highly productive, digitally-led building industry.

Bryden Wood, holder of a 2018 Queens Award for Enterprise and Innovation, is the only design consultancy to bring together architects and engineers with business analysts, mathematical modellers, software coders and data analysts. This allows clients to test hundreds of possible building solutions, optimising investment by selecting those with the greatest benefit. Major clients include Circle Healthcare, Heathrow Airport, Crossrail and the Ministry of Justice. Bryden Wood is currently working with the GLA on an entirely new approach to house building, using manufacturing-led construction. This will change the way housing in London is designed, procured and delivered.

Bryden Wood director and head of global systems Jaimie Johnston said that the construction industry would be totally transformed over the next 10 years.

“The technological transformation of our industry is bringing new ways of working and new processes. The work done with the MTC to date has been invaluable to establish a strong vision but it is just the start. Manufacturing-led construction will mean high-quality building at lower cost. The potential is the kind of transformation experienced in other industries. In other words, construction’s ‘Uber moment’”

The MTC already has a proven track record developing new technologies and manufacturing systems for a range of other sectors including defence, automotive and aerospace, and is promoting the advantages of adapting technologies like automation, robotics and virtual reality for the benefit of the construction industry.

Trudi Sully, associate director for construction and infrastructure at the MTC, said she was delighted that Bryden Wood would be continuing to work with the MTC.

“The partnership that we have already established with Bryden Wood has proved hugely beneficial to both parties and the opportunity to formalise this and take it forward will only enhance the support we can offer to the construction industry.”

She added:

“The MTC has established a position supporting change in the construction sector through translation of our leading manufacturing process improvement capabilities, already proven in other industries. We’re eager to further develop and support the adoption of game-changing processes and technologies for the sector”

The MTC aims to provide a competitive environment to bridge the gap between university-based research and the development of innovative manufacturing solutions, in line with the Government’s manufacturing strategy. The MTC is part the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, supported by Innovate UK.
