McDonald Engineers: Scotland’s first stainless steel hot-water cylinder production line
Fife-based, McDonald Engineers are an SME with a long successful history of manufacturing copper hot water cylinders. With the price of copper increasing significantly they wanted to introduce a stainless steel product line to extend their markets and stay ahead of their competitors. The company had no experience of working with stainless steel and embarked on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with the Advanced Forming Research Centre to gain a better understanding of the new material and to design and install a brand new manufacturing process. McDonald Engineers now has an extended product range, new skills and techniques, and has the first stainless steel hot water cylinder production line in Scotland. The KTP Associate was awarded the Scottish Engineering, Glasgow Incorporation of Hammermen Award 2012 for his work on the project.
The AFRC is currently working on several new KTP projects with other local SMEs.
