Casting

Casting is a manufacturing process by which a liquid material is usually poured into a mould, which contains a hollow cavity of the desired shape, and is then allowed to solidify.

Within the HVM Catapult network, the AMRC is a world-class facility dedicated to developing new, technology-driven solutions for metal castings exists and supporting UK industry to remain globally competitive.

The Castings Technology International (CTI) at AMRC provides expertise to producers and users of metal castings across sectors such as aerospace, energy and automotive. It has production scale, technology demonstrator facilities supported by a capability in computer process modelling to simulate molten metal flow and metal solidification, design for casting manufacture, new casting process development and materials R&D.

The facility also has expertise in materials such as cast titanium, nickel-based superalloys, aluminium and a wide variety of steel grades such as Super Duplex, CA6NM, 17-4, for use in high duty, critical applications. By exploiting improvements in design for casting manufacture and manufacturing and material process development, CTI aims to reduce end-product and life cycle costs, enhance product performance and reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing.

In addition to its product and process development activities, CTI also provides a foundry, engineering and environmental consultancy, delivering technological solutions to its partner companies. The consultancy team is supported by a well-equipped UKAS accredited laboratory and materials testing facility.
